Redwood Administrator Insights from Abigail Tardivel
5 September 2024
Can you give us a little overview of your role at Redwood?
During my time with Redwood, I’ve primarily undertaken project work to support the company’s expansion. When I first joined the Co Sec team, there were just four of us. Since then, the team has grown to twelve, and I’ve been fortunate to contribute to that growth through various projects.
Being part of the company’s expansion has allowed me to contribute meaningfully to larger goals whilst developing a well-rounded corporate governance skill set. My role has offered a blend of responsibility, learning and growth, aligned with the company’s mission to scale and succeed in its industry.
What have you most enjoyed about working at Redwood?
I’ve had the privilege to work with some fantastic people, and the team’s supportive and collaborative nature has been a key factor in my personal and professional growth. From day one, there’s been open communication across the company, which has fostered an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas, asking questions and offering support.
Redwood’s commitment to creating a positive work culture has played a huge role in making my time here enjoyable. Being part of such a dynamic and growing organisation has been a pleasure, and I’m grateful for the relationships and experiences I’ve gained along the way.
What is the greatest thing you have learned?
I’ve learned how to navigate and thrive in a professional office environment, significantly improving my business etiquette. From collaborating with colleagues to managing client interactions, I’ve gained invaluable experience in understanding how to operate effectively within a business setting.
A key aspect of my growth has been working directly with clients, which has enhanced my communication skills and taught me how to manage relationships professionally.
I’ve learned how to balance professionalism with teamwork, build strong internal and external relationships, and continuously adapt to a dynamic business landscape. These experiences have equipped me with skills I’ll carry forward in my career.
Can you share some highlights from your time at Redwood?
The team events and socials have definitely been some of my most memorable highlights. One of my favourite experiences was participating in the Guernsey relay marathon and the town relay team. Both were great opportunities to connect with colleagues outside of the office and strengthen our teamwork in a fun, challenging way.
The recent boat trip around Herm and Jethou also stands out as a particularly special day. Social drinks with the team have also been great, as they’ve provided an informal way to bond with colleagues while contributing to Redwood’s strong sense of community.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Governance?
My biggest piece of advice would be to embrace every learning opportunity and stay adaptable. Governance is a dynamic field that offers a mix of legal, business and communication skills, so the more open you are to learning, the more you’ll grow. As someone who started working while still a student, I’ve learned that balancing academics and professional work can be challenging, but it’s a great way to gain real-world experience early on.
Also, don’t underestimate the importance of building relationships. Governance roles often involve working closely with clients and internal teams, so good communication skills and strong relationships are essential.
Can you share your future career ambitions with us?
My main focus is to complete my training contract in London and qualify as a solicitor within the next two years. I believe training in such a dynamic environment will give me exposure to a wide range of high-calibre and complex cases that will accelerate my development.
In the longer term, I would like to progress within a law firm, taking on more responsibility and eventually aiming for a partner position. Ultimately, I’m excited about the challenges and growth opportunities a legal career in London will bring, and I’m committed to making a positive impact in the profession.
How has your experience at Redwood helped you prepare for your future career in law?
Overall, my time at Redwood has provided me with a solid foundation for my future legal career. The combination of practical legal experience, business insight and client interaction has given me a well-rounded perspective that I’ll carry forward into the legal profession.
I’m confident that the skills and knowledge I’ve gained at Redwood will serve me well as I continue to grow and pursue a successful legal career.
